Gangrene

What is Gangrene?

Gangrene is the death of body tissue brought on by a major bacterial infection or a lack of blood supply. Gangrene may occur on toes, fingers, arms, legs, and even in the muscles and internal organs like the gallbladder. Regardless of where it may occur, they all require immediate medical attention.

What Causes Gangrene?

A condition like diabetes or atherosclerosis, which can stiffen the arteries and impede blood flow, raises the risk of gangrene.

  • An infection
  • An injury, burn or wound
  • A chronic disease

Diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and Raynaud’s illness are examples of chronic conditions that damage the circulatory system. These frequently result in gangrene. Blood flow may also be stopped by traumatic injuries like burns or an infected dog bite. Gangrene can result from severe cases of frostbite as well.

Who Is at Risk for Gangrene?

Gangrene is more likely to occur in those with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and Raynaud’s disease. Gangrene can result from skin diseases, wounds, burns, dog bites, and frostbite.
